Hazard Pictograms

Today we are going to talk about some pictograms, those are used on labels to alert chemical users hazards that they may be exposed. The hazard pictograms consist of a symbol on white background within red boarder and represents a distinct hazard. To us, we always use some of them on the labeling of our products, just to inform our clients and users about the type of material that storing in our products: Take our most common product line of safety cabinet as an example, here we can see the labeling of this cabinet is using the sign of flammable, which means the liquid with flash point temperature between 0 and 140°F (60 °C). And depends on the complex chemical characteristics of different material, additional config like ventilation or fire extinguishing system would be needed for fire hazard. And according to the EN standard, the cabinet is painted in yellow. And for this cabinet we can tell from the label that the chemical stored inside is corrosive when referring to the effect of living tissues. It can be poison, cause chemical burn and distinct damage, even rusting to metal. Some type of corrosion creates corrosive mists when contacting air. Storage of Ether

Last time we discussed about the ethanol and its solution for storage. Today we are going to discuss about its brother: Ether. Ether is widely used in health care industry and well known as antiseptic to prevent infection when an injection is made, also it is used as an anaesthetic in hospitals to help people go to sleep or become unconscious during surgery. Ether is created from the chemical action between ethanol and sulfuric acid, so its physical and chemical characteristic is close to ethanol: it is highly flammable, volatile, easily to form explosive peroxides. In fact it is so easy to form peroxide that any exposure to light and air would enhance the formation, which makes this chemical extremely dangerous with prolonged storage. No matter Ethyl ether, isopropyl ether, tetrahydrofuran or many other ethers tend to absorb and react with oxygen from the air to form unstable peroxides that may concentrated by evaporation or distillation, and when combined with other compounds that give a detonatable mixture, or when disturbed by unusual heat, shock, or friction, the whole thing would become extreme violence. That is how we get unexpected explosions. Ether would ignite at temperature at or above 160 C (320 F). The vapor forms explosive mixtures in air at concentration of 1.9-36% by volume. The flash point of ethyl ether is -45 C (-49 F). Though there is no evidence show refrigerated storage prevent formation of peroxides, but it is frequently stored under refrigeration. So, when we are storing ether, keep the containers sealed, DO NOT expose your ether in air for long, no matter it is glass made bottle or outdoor steel tanks. Good ventilation would be needed to make sure the vapors got no way to mix with air and create explosive mixtures with other compounds. Make your room temperature below 26 C, it should be cool. DO NOT store ether with Oxidant, DO NOT store big amount of ether, and DO NOT expose it to source of heat and ignition. When your ether has not been opened for long time, it is better not open it without protection. Also, make sure the containers for ether are kept with spill containment solutions. How to store Acetone?

When we talk about Acetone, one interesting fact about it is: if we pour acetone on top of small amount of water SLOWLY, we would see two layers forming, and the acetone layer is on top. That means two things: 1.Acetone does not mix with water. 2.Acetone is less dense than water. So, this makes acetone used as organic solvent in industries, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, it makes great degreaser, cleaner, remover, thinning agent, etc and it helps to be used as a solvent to deliver accurate dosage in medication. But according to NFPA, acetone is defined as class 1B flammable liquid, which means it is extremely flammable and dangerous. The flash point of acetone is -20 C (-4 F). Furthermore, when acetone forms vapors and mix with air, the mixture of 2.5-12.8% would be explosive when get touched with source of ignition. Static discharge may also ignite acetone vapors (for the hazard of static discharge, please refer to our historical article), the sensitivity to source of ignition makes acetone hard to store. For indoor storage, no more than 60 gallons of acetone can be stored, and if you need to store more than 120 gallons of acetone, special safety building for flammable storage would be needed. And the fire rate of the building should be 2 hours/4 hours. And when working with acetone, you need to wear PPE, in order to protect your eyes and skin away from touching acetone. Firstly do not store large amount indoor, you need to use LDPE bottle with good sealing to put in your acetone, then put your bottles into delicate safety cabinet for flammable storage. Keep your warehouse well vented and free of ignition, no fire work around, no smoking. Do not mix the storage with oxidizing agents/alkalines. Do not let room temperature go up to more than 26℃. And for large amount storage of acetone, it would be better to use our outdoor storage container, it would be comply with NFPA regulation and safe enough against fire and explosion.

How to improve the safety management of cylinders?

Why the acetylene cylinder must be kept upright? 1.When the acetylene cylinder which contains filler and solvent (acetone) and lays on the floor for usage, the acetone is easily flow out with acetylene gas, this would increase the consumption volume of acetone and reduce the burning temperature, and in any case backfire occurs it might cause explosion of acetylene cylinder. 2.When the acetylene cylinder is laid on the floor, it is easy to roll, and when it hits another cylinder or something, the collision might cause accident. 3.The acetylene cylinder equips with anti-vibration ring, the purpose is to avoid collision of cylinders during unloading, transportation and usage, the ring is made of rubber and it is electrical insulator, when the cylinder is laid on the floor it is same as laying on insulator, the static generated on the cylinder can not spread to ground and produce static sparks. And when acetylene gas leaks, it would be easily cause combustion and explosion accidents. 4.When in use, the acetylene cylinder equips with regulator and fire arrestor connected with a hose, and if the cylinder is laid on the floor, it might break the regulator easily or pull the arrestor off the hose, and that will cause acetylene leakage, or even combustion and explosion, based on the reasons above, the acetylene cylinder must be placed upright. Why excess pressure must be reserved in the acetylene cylinder? As the explosion limit of acetylene is quite low, even a little air mixed in might create explosion, so there must be an regulator to release pressure and prevent the air from mixing into the cylinder, in order to reduce the risk of explosion of next time. And with the regulator, it calls for excess gas inside the acetylene cylinder, gas cylinders and hydrogen cylinders. It is the same reason   How to improve the safety management of cylinders? How to manage laboratory precursor chemicals?

Regulate the management of precursor chemicals in laboratories, prevent precursor chemicals from being used in the manufacture of drugs, and prevent safety and environmental pollution accidents. 1.The list of precursor chemicals shall be stored in the special chemical storage cabinet, and the corresponding chemicals shall be purchased and stored as little as possible without affecting their use. 2.The storage cabinet of precursor chemicals implements a double-lock storage system, and two people in the using department hold a key respectively. 3.Recipients and custodians should understand the physical and chemical properties and safe operation methods of the corresponding chemicals. 4.After the precursor chemicals arrive at the unit, the safety management personnel must be present to supervise the unloading and warehousing. After the quantity is checked and correct, the deliverer, the custodian and the safety management personnel shall sign the registration book of precursor chemicals respectively. 5.Two persons holding the key must be present at the same time, and truthfully record and sign the quantity and purpose of use. The corresponding records of storage and use must be formed into a ledger and bound separately for reference. The corresponding records are kept for at least 2 years. 6.Clear, comprehensive and accurate account registration. The custodian and safety management personnel shall check the quantity of use and inventory in the month of each month, and sign the inventory record on a regular basis every month for confirmation. If the quantity is found to be inconsistent in the inventory, it should be reported to the laboratory department manager and the user for review immediately; If found stolen should immediately report to the public security organs. 7.The warehouse or storage cabinet should be kept dry and ventilated, and the items should be neatly placed and easily accessed. Do not eat or drink in places where the chemicals are used or stored. 8.Fire fighting facilities in chemical storage areas should be safe and effective, and custodians and users should be proficient in the use of fire fighting equipment to prevent fire accidents. 9.Personnel who use the corresponding chemicals must be equipped with corresponding labor protection articles. 10.When purchasing the corresponding chemicals, it is necessary to go through formal channels, the supplier of the corresponding chemicals must comply with the relevant laws and regulations, and the corresponding chemicals are legally and lawfully delivered to the company, and the company personnel are strictly prohibited to pick up the goods from the door. 11.The management personnel of the use and storage of the corresponding chemicals must undergo corresponding training and be familiar with the nature and safety protection knowledge of dangerous goods before operation. 12.The waste water, waste gas, waste packaging (containing or adhering to the corresponding chemicals) generated in the process of use must be treated and discharged in accordance with the relevant provisions of the State, and the wastes that can chemically react with each other into new hazards cannot be mixed together; The packaging of the corresponding chemicals shall be preferentially recycled or reused by the chemical supplier, and the enterprise shall dispose of the solid waste in accordance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Waste. 13.Before handling the Verification Certificate of Precursor Chemical Enterprises, it is strictly prohibited to purchase corresponding chemicals without authorization.
